Community rules
Draft · will change before launch
This is a place for writing fictional worlds. A dark history, a cruel institution, an ideology that makes you uncomfortable — all of these can belong to a world, and writing them well is much of what this kind of fiction is for. The rules care about one thing only: are you writing a world, or using a world to make propaganda?
You can write
- Worlds with racism, massacre, colonialism, slavery and religious persecution in them.
- From the perpetrator's point of view, including perpetrators who sincerely believe they are right.
- In-world propaganda, edicts, newspapers, textbooks and other documents from inside the fiction, however extreme their own positions. They are part of the world, not the author speaking.
- Invented states modelled on real countries and peoples, and fictional histories of them.
You can't write
- Glorification: a work that, taken as a whole, presents oppression, massacre or ethnic cleansing as a satisfying victory and reward, inviting the reader to cheer.
- Supremacist wish-fulfilment: "empire" stories built on one people's innate superiority, in which destroying, expelling or enslaving other peoples is the happy ending.
- Targeting real groups: fantasies of exterminating or expelling a people, religion or group that exists in reality, whatever fictional costume they wear.
- The author endorsing it: expressing approval of racism, massacre or crimes against humanity outside the fiction — in blurbs, notes, comments or an author's note.
- Current real-world politics: insinuation, attacks or propaganda aimed at living politicians and at present-day governments and parties, in any direction. Invented states are not covered by this rule.
- Anything that works as real-world propaganda once the fictional frame is taken away.
Judge the frame, not the subject
The same in-world edict ordering a massacre means something completely different depending on the story around it:
The edict is given in full; what follows is its enforcers justifying themselves, the survivors' records, the register dug up three hundred years later. The reader sees how a system worked and how it is remembered.
The edict is given in full; what follows is "and so there was peace under heaven", the cleansed people never heard of again, and the whole story treats this as its climax and reward.
When in doubt, moderators look at the whole work, not a single passage or a keyword.
Content tags
Worlds and pieces that involve massacre, racial persecution, sexual violence or torture should carry the matching content tags. Tags are not a penalty; they are a courtesy to readers.
AI-generated content
- Text generated or substantially rewritten by AI must be labelled.
- AI-generated "historical photographs" must carry the site's watermark, and their file information will say they are fiction. A fake historical photo set in real places, once screenshotted and passed around, will be taken as real.
- The site's AI assistant follows these same rules and will not help write glorification.
Enforcement
Reports are reviewed by people. AI may do a first pass, but hiding, removal and bans are decided by people, and every decision can be appealed.
